Lambeth council were making major sustainable innovations at a site on their major Clapham Park redevelopment. New roofs were fitted, generating clean electricity using PV solar shingles, packed with recycled cellulose insulation, with a structure of reforested timber.
All these features were invisible, and the client asked us to create an installation to engage the residents (between 55 and 92 years old), and visitors in the work, and communicate the benefits in language that made sense. We ended up with two use modes: 'washing' and 'bingo!'. The display presents all the materials in a touchable way, and describes power in terms of cups-of tea, lightbulbs and episodes of the Archers, as well as the more conventional kilowatts.
